Dr. Athula Sumathipala, Director IRD, has been invited to deliver a guest lecture at the WPA Thematic Conference which under the title of “Depression and Other Common Mental Disorders in Primary Care” will be held in Granada (Spain), from the 18th to the 21st of June of 2008. This Conference is a joint initiative of the World Psychiatric Association & WONCA-Europe. It is also co-sponsored by the Word Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), among others.
Dr. Sumathipala will deliver a lecture titled “Medically unexplained symptoms; treatment development research in Sri Lanka” under the sectional theme of “Primary Care Mental Health in lower and middle income countries. What can the West learn?”
Dr. Athula Sumathipala is the Honorary Director of the Institute for Research & Development (IRD) and has vast experience in the fields of mental health, primary care, medically unexplained symptoms and bioethics among others.
Dr. Sumathipala has been identified by the organizers as one of the scientific leaders in the global research community in the field of medically unexplained symptoms and this invitation comes as recognition of his pioneering research including the only two treatment trials done in the developing world for medically unexplained symptoms using psychological intervention |

IRD establishes collaboration programme with SciDev.net |

Institute for Research & Development has established collaboration with Science Development Network (www.SciDev.net) where IRD will work together with SciDev to promote Sri Lankan science and research in the international arena. Further more, an agreement was reached to share news and other media material between ‘Gaveshana' and SciDev.net.
During the visit Ms Padma met with ‘Gaveshana' Editorial Board and other IRD members. SciDev.Net is the world's leading electronic source of free news, views and analysis about science and technology in the developing world.

Social Experience & Mental Health |

A lecture themed ‘Social Experience & Mental Health: Insights from Studies of Migration & Ethnicity' was held at IRD recently. This lecture was conducted by Dr. Craig Morgan, senior lecturer, Institute of Psychiatry, King's College, London. Dr Morgan discussed a research project undertaken by him and his colleagues in London to measure the impact of social experience on mental health status of immigrants of African and Caribbean origin. Using his work as an example,Dr Morgan pointed out that people's social experience that they undergo from birth have a significant effect on their subsequent mental health status.The lecture was attended by academics, medical professional, social scientists and social workers who are engaged in social and mental health research in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan expatriates in Australia donate funds for 'Gaveshana' |

Sri Lankan professionals who are living in Australia have donated funds to the ‘Gaveshana'. In this initiative, headed by Dr. Padmini Howpage, funds were donated for ‘Gaveshana' subscriptions to needy schools in Sri Lanka. Individuals as well as organizations like the ‘Old Vishakian's Group' has contributed to this initiative.
The funds were handed over to the ‘Gaveshana' team by Dr. Daya Howpage recently at IRD.
