Each year the International Forum for Child Welfare (IFCW) holds an international conference known as the WorldForum, which is co-hosted by one of its member organisations. The 19th WorldForum is being held in Cardiff, Wales and is being co-hosted by Children in Wales. The broad theme of the WorldForum 2008 is ‘Early Intervention and Prevention’.
Dr. W.A.D. Jayasinghe (Institute for Research and Development, Sri Lanka) displayed a poster on Child Negligence of Mother Absent Families. It was based on a cross sectional study compared randomly selected 850 children (index group) between the ages of 13-15 years whose mothers were employed abroad with similar group of children who were living with their mothers (comparison group).
His poster presentation described, risk groups and early interventions for preventing the child maltreatments, the research priority areas in the left behind children by the migrant parent, research methods used for studying the child maltreatment, negative impact of behaviour and school performances of this children. |

ISPCAN's members from nearly 180 different countries represent every key professional group involved in shaping the response to child abuse. The ISPCAN community includes social workers, physicians, psychiatrists, nurses, child protection workers, mental health workers, psychologists, lawyers, judges, law enforcement officers, investigators, government/ community officials, researchers, educators, non-government organizations, leaders, advocates, clergy and other professionals.
Dr. Anura Jayasinghe made a presentation on the Child abuse and neglect among children of migrant mothers, representing the IRD in Sri Lanka. He chaired two sessions on Child Sex Tourism and Immigrants Children at Risk.

He has been invited to share his knowledge and expertise to facilitate post-disaster management, planning and training on the conduct of research in the Sichuan province which was hit by a devastating earthquake in May this year and another earthquake as recently as in August this year.
Dr Sumathipala met the first secretary of the Chinese embassy, Yu Zhu prior to the trip where he discussed the situation in Sichuan province and he also presented a manual and a poster on disaster management based on various post-disaster research conducted by him.

Improving Identification & Management of Mood Disorders

Eight Sri Lankan medical professionals recently left for Australia to be trained on management of mood disorders at the Black Dog Institute in Sydney. Institute for Research & Development in collaboration with the Black Dog Institute and other Sri Lankan organizations including Sri Lanka Medical Association, College of General Practitioners, Sri Lanka Mental Health Directorate and the Regional Director of Health Services, Ministry of Health, World Health Organization-Sri Lanka, Creative Action and Open University of Sri Lanka organized the training workshop. The training workshop is funded by the Christopher Molnar Bequest, Australia.
The eight professionals will undergo two week training programme on mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder and their management which consists of two main phases which will carried out in 2008 and 2009.

Psychiatrist warns against 'disaster experts' |

Dr. Athula Sumathipala, Research Associate, Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College University of London warned last week against the hidden agendas of certain 'good Samaritans' who rush into countries in times of disaster. He made special reference to the tsunami of December 26, 2004.
Dr. Sumathipala was speaking on Helping disaster survivors: "What should be and should not be done," at the Dharmavijaya Foundation, Colombo 7 on July 16. The Red Lotus Buddhist Humanitarian Association in collaboration with the Institute for Research and Development organized the lecture.

Winners of Island Wide Competition on Road Safety |

‘Gaveshana' research journal, published by the Institute for Research & Development and Lanka Academic Network (LAcNet) jointly organized an Island-wide Research Project Competition on Road Safety among school children. The objectives of organizing the competition were to educate the general public on road rules and road safety and to popularize concepts of scientific research methodology among students. The competition was mainly aimed at Advanced Level students in schools across the country.
The following students were awarded cash prizes and certificates of merit for their projects on 18th July 2008 at the IRD Head Office, Battaramulla.
