First Media briefing of Institute for Research & Development |
| |
|
| |
Institute for Research and Development is pleased to announce its first media briefing held on 7th April 2009 at the office premises. This was aimed to form a network with the participation of all media organization in the country to disseminate the findings collected through various research conducted by IRD with the broader community to make the IRD slogan a reality –‘Research for Development and Policy Impact’
Addressing this meeting, Director IRD, Dr. Athula Sumathipala explained how IRD was involved in building a novel research culture in Sri Lanka. There are researchers in our Country who can challenge the research conducted internationally, but unfortunately we are still being dominated by international communities. We had similar experience in the time of Tsunami devastation in our country. Under the cover of research certain internationally recognized bodies tried exploiting our resources. Our aim is to address these issues and develop a new, ethical research culture in Sri Lanka.
He further explained of a brand new, state-of-the-art gene laboratory established by IRD recently. This will help to prevent possibilities of our genetic material getting smuggled abroad. Therefore, we can protect our very own genetic resources and safeguard it for our future generation.
Representatives of nineteen media organizations from both electronic and print media participated enthusiastically proving their interest on this particular event. Ms. Kumuduni Bandara from Lakbima National News Paper commented that she was happy to have been offered the opportunity to participate in the occasion which was very important and useful. |
